Keyword Research Improves Sales

Many website owners want to get their websites listed highly for search terms. It’s not very easy to get sales from the search engines if you pick the wrong keywords. If you want success online, keyword research is definitely necessary. To get an online business started up properly, keyword research is critical.

 

There are many inexperienced website owners that claim that you should use keywords that are long tail. I don’t know who came up with this reasoning, but it’s not very smart. It is rare to find long tail keywords that even get searched. If you optimize for some long tail keywords, it doesn’t matter if you are first or last, you won’t see any traffic.

 

You really need to look for keywords that get searched but aren’t being optimized very well. You should not base your keyword choice on whether it is long tail or not. The competitiveness of a keyword is not based on how long it is. There are actually many five word keywords that get more traffic than one word keywords, and those would be defined a long tail keywords.

 

I will let you know exactly what I do for keyword research. First, I examine hundreds of keywords and pick some that apply to my website. Next, I use Keyword Elite to examine the volume of search per month that each keyword is receiving. I do not use the Google Keyword Tool because I don’t think it’s very accurate.

 

Next, I do a search in the search engine for the keywords that get good search traffic. I pick the site that is ranking number one, and I use the link command in Yahoo to examine the websites linking to them. I look to see if the site is getting backlinks with the keyword in them.

 

If the links are not the keyword search term, then I know that the website owner in the first position is relatively clueless. I come to the conclusion that the website owner can be easily outranked with links and time.

 

Tons of new webmasters actually think it’s going to be a lot more difficult to rank well than it really is. It is important to realize that you probably know more about search engine optimization than the person who is ranking number one. It is very easy to gain the number one ranking for many terms and start making money.
