5 Stars Excellent, elegant storage – but watch the head room
After turning to Oxo containers to impose order on the chaos of my kitchen pantry, I can’t imagine going back. Someone took an interest in improving the lowly kitchen canister and the results are beyond impressive: sturdy, well-designed and effectively engineered containers.

The weight of each unit is lighter than comparably sized glass containers I’ve considered. But, like with clear glass, a glance inside the pantry now lets me assess quickly what’s there and, importantly, how much. Furthermore, these differ from other plastic canisters because not only is air sealed out by the silicon gasket, the “pop” makes it easy to open. For someone whose wrist took a long time to heal after a break, this is very important.

We’re not talking about the little machines that suck all the air out of a package. But my almost forty years in the kitchen tells me that keeping air OUT of cereal, pasta, corn meal, and other dry ingredients is enough to keep them from going stale before they are used up.

One caveat, though. Adding the distinctive and effective top to a container tall enough to hold spaghetti means that the container is just a tiny bit too tall for the shelves built into our pantry in our 21st century subdivision spec house. Ideally, we’ll have one shelf bumped up just a bit to accommodate these: a little bit of a hassle, admittedly. But for me, the utility of these containers actually justifies the trouble. That would be crazy, except that Oxo canisters are making the pantry work for us.
